Salt Spring Island Fire Department Innovations

Self contained Breathing Apparatus Face Piece Protector and Storage Unit

The process starts with the marking of the funnel units to allow for proper fit and drainage of MSA facepieces.  The funnel is a standard 120 oz size (3.4l) plastic funnel.  They can be purchased at any automotive store or industrial outlet.  The funnel is flexible yet very durable.  The funnel we use is a Canadian made Onward Cluthe funnel model #30080.

Shown here are the funnels right to left in various stages of the process.

Shown here is the method we use for marking the funnel for the cut out.  A one litre paint can with a marker taped to a ruler for proper height and then rotated 360 degrees around the funnel base.

The marked area on one funnel and the cut area on the finished funnel.

The funnel can be mounted in fire apparatus cabinets or inside the cab.  Our Department has installed these face mask holder in both the cabinets and the Engines Cab.

For the mounting bracket we had our local fabricator construct these light weight aluminum brackets.  They're easily riveted to back side of funnel.  The brace is 11 inches long and bent in the curvature of the funnel.  It is then fastened with a three point contact.

Face mask holder mounted on a cabinet door and in the interior of cab.

Never store your valuable MSA S.C.B.A. face piece like this again.

From now on you can keep your MSA facepiece from getting scratched, dirty and damaged by storing the unit in a nice neat protective sleeve like this.

The lens never touches the funnel or the rivets and is now protected for scratches and other wear & tear

A Perfect Storage idea for your Department!
